WHAT IS POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT?

Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) is a way of creating a positive and predictable school environment. PBIS is focused on improving climate and culture through three basic ideas:

  1. Develop consistent school wide and classroom beliefs.

  2. Teach these beliefs to all students in a variety of ways.

  3. Recognize students for following beliefs.

PBIS strategies also include using data for decision-making, providing extra support for struggling students, and consequences for not complying with beliefs.

At Barnes, we have expectations for all areas of our school including: hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria, classroom, playground, arrival, and dismissal. All staff teaches these expectations / beliefs through activities like “BEAR Boot Camp” and assemblies. Staff then provides recognition for students who follow the our beliefs like participation in school wide celebrations. Self-management strategies and discipline procedures are used with struggling students. Finally, data is collected and reviewed to improve the system.

PBIS creates a culture of respect that allows teachers and students to focus on reading, writing, and math. Through PBIS, misbehavior is minimized and self-management is maximized. The end result is more time for teaching and learning.

Please take some time to look over the other PBIS links on the left hand side of this page as well as the videos and discuss them with your child. They explain our expectations / beliefs, teaching, recognition, and discipline system in greater detail. Our PBIS video is a great place to start.
